PASCALL PRIZE FOR CRITICAL WRITING

 2003 Judges' Report

Julie Rigg

Julie Rigg's reviews for ABC Radio National display a true love of film and a consistently original point of view expressed in a warm and personal tone. Particularly engaging is her way of using the review of a single film to embark on a discussion of the genre to which it belongs and the cinematic influences which have gone into its making. She's skilled, too, at putting films into a social and political context.

She has been reviewing now for a decade, but her distinguished career in journalism as both writer and broadcaster goes back much further. She began as a cadet on The Daily Telegraph, then moved on to The Australian, where she worked as a reporter, feature writer and columnist before switching to broadcasting with ABC Radio in the 1970's. And her experience in all these areas is reflected in her broad range of interests. Film is a synthesis of all the arts - something her reviews never fail to take into account. Her intellectual curiosity always informs her work as a critic and this, together with all her other qualities, make her, in our view, a very worthy recipient of this year's Pascall Prize.
